Larry Davis Vernec Jazz Bassist Bass Denver

Larry Davis Vernec

Denver Jazz Bassist & Combo Leader

Born and raised in Montreal Quebec, Vernec studied guitar and theory during his early years and then Economics at McGill University before moving to San Diego in 1979.

He began his formal bass studies with John Leftwich in Cardiff-by-the Sea in 1982.  John has composed and toured with Hubert Laws, Freddie Hubbard, Sergio Mendez, Carmen McCrae, Ricki Lee Jones and continues to be a force in today’s Los Angeles recording scene.

Thanks to John’s versatility and his encouragement, Vernec committed to bringing the not- so-orthodox electric bass sound to traditional jazz and enjoys the tone and modern presence it contributes.

Vernec played jazz in the San Diego area for nearly thirty years, playing straight ahead and modern jazz with a variety of local players, and currently plays with Adam Wolff, Michael Evans, Ronnie Steward and Russell Bizzett (worked with Jose Feliciano, Tommy Bolin, Robben Ford, Freddie Hubbard, Ravi Coltrane and Billy Preston).

Previously, in San Diego, Vernec collaborated with Adam Wolff, Armenta, Cannon to record several albums as Blue44 – a composein-the-moment project, where band members would compose and play with no pre-planned roadmap.   Emphasis was on rhythm and grooves.   So It Goes and The Vault were released in 2004 and were recorded live at clubs in San Diego.

In mid 2018, Vernec moved to Denver Colorado, where he quickly connected to local musicians at CJW and CCJA, receiving mentoring and introductions to the Denver jazz scene from players like Keith Oxman, Joe Anderies, Dru Heller and Paul Romain.

Today, Vernec can be heard performing with many of Denver’s talented musicians, including Joe Anderies, Tenia Nelson, Harold Summey, Elliot Litz, Jake Hakkarinen, Daniel Moran, Mike Garvey, Ross Rabin and others.
